Summer Playland Festival 2012 featuring ME

07.05.12

Yes, the rumors are true. I have been asked to play at the first ever Summer Playland Festival in Vancouver this July! Before I go into too much detail, check out this video I did… it will give you an idea as to what this festival is all about:

So there you have it. How awesome does that sound?! And the best part is… all of my talented friends are sharing the stage with me. Dirty Radio (@dirtyradiomusic), Neverest (@neverestmusic), Dragonette (@Dragonette), and Eric Solomon (@esolomonmusic) are some of them. As you know, I’ve been touring with Eric for over a year. Thanks to him, I’ve had a lot of practice working my stage moves, and now I’m ready to rock you all while grooving to my own tunes!

It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve done a fully produced show like this. I’ll be playing all new songs and am more excited than ever to showcase my music.

Within those 2 years that I wasn’t playing my own music live, I’ve been working hard on building my new sound. It’s still me, it’s still a little like my last album, and it’s still a little quirky, but now imagine all those things but BETTER. It’s bigger, it’s more electronic, it’s more pop, and most importantly it’s more ME.

This show is my first step into the world with my new and improved style, and I would love to see you there. Here are the details:

Summer Playland Festival \\\ July 6th, 7th, and 8th \\\ 2012
Location:
Playland (obviously)
My Set Times:

Sunday July 8th: – 12:00pm

Touring with …

20.03.12

Hey Everyone!

Guess what?! I’m on tour again with Eric Solomon and this time we’re opening up for DRAGONETTE!!!!

I’m sure you’re all wondering why you are just hearing about this now. Well, I really don’t have a good excuse, other than that I’ve been insanely busy! I got home from Los Angeles last Wednesday after a 3 day long drive home. I managed to get everything necessary organized, celebrated my birthday, packed up my life again and headed out on a plane to Toronto yesterday to meet Eric and our tour manager Karen.

This trip out east is going to be awesome. I’m really looking forward to playing live again. Dragonette draws a cool crowd and it will be a totally new experience for me. After wards, I get to stay in Toronto for 4 days, lock myself in a studio with some of the best song writers in Canada and exercise one of my other passions, song writing. Speaking of which, I have a few up and coming artists singing songs that I have co-written. I can’t tell you who just yet, but I’m very excited about that. For all of my fans out East, here are the tour dates:

KINGSTON | The Ale House | 03.21.12
LONDON | The Wave | 03.22.12
TORONTO | The Hoxton | 03.23.12
WATERLOO | Starlight | 03.24.12

And for all of my Vancouverites…

WHISTLER | Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival | 04.19.12

Hope to see you at one of the shows!

What kind of, excuse my language, F**king message is this Rihanna?

12.03.12

This is what Rihanna wore out to dinner on Sunday night.

I was honestly disgusted. What kind of a message is this? Young women do not need any more bad examples. I’ve been doing a lot of research lately on the sexualization of young girls. Because of images like this, among many others, tweens feel the need to dress and act much older than they actually are.

Today’s media is so over the top that we have become desensitized to it. Rihanna only did this because it’s one of the last things left she can do to get any ‘shock value’.

What you have to realize is this. Tweens are SOOO impressionable. When I was 10 years old, all I wanted to be was a grown up. I wanted to go shopping and buy cool cloths and hang out with the big kids. When role models, magazine models, and advertisements evolve around exploiting sexuality, these girls think it’s cool. Kids are the master of replication, and you wouldn’t believe the things they are doing to get attention.

Two grade 7 girls at a sleep over took topless photos of themselves and sent it to a boy in their class that they had a crush on. Of course, the photos went viral. When the two girls were asked why they would do something like this, they said, ‘to get noticed.’

AND WHAT DO YOU THINK RIHANNA IS TRYING TO DO IN THIS PHOTO? To get noticed! What a great role model girlfriend… NOT!

I’m so passionate about teen confidence, and being someone who was bullied and felt small all through out elementary school and high school, I want girls to know that you DON’T have to be this way. You can be sexy with out being sexual.

I highly recommend you take 45 minutes out of your day to click here and watch this video. It goes into further detail about what I’ve been talking about.

That’s my rant. Take it or leave it, but you gotta admit, I’m kind of right ;)

My new music video is called NAKED. Woah… how scandalous

20.02.12

Hey everyone!

Hope you are having a fantastic long weekend. I released this video a week ago today and am STOKED about how much positive feedback it’s gotten already.

Let me tell you a lil’ about the song before I get you watching it. The short story is that it’s a love song :) But not just any love song. No sir. THIS love song is about what love is actually like. Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad, sometimes its like being on ecstasy, and sometimes is super chill, rad, and fab. To summarize, when you are truly in love, it’s like being naked around that person. You have no walls or cloths to hide behind. You don’t have to play games with them. You are finally able to be YOU.

So with out any further adieu, I give you, NAKED.

If you like, please share!

Love,
Kaylee Johnston xo
